Our holidaying experience has taken us to the Spanish
Mainland, all the Balearic Islands, Malta, Cyprus, the old Yugoslavia,
Fuerteventura, Tenerife, Tunisia, Turkey, the Greek mainland, and the islands of
Lesvos, Rhodes, Crete, Corfu, Zakinthos, Cefalonia, & Skiathos.
Corfu
One of my main other interests is holidaying with my wife Sue. We both love
vacation time, with the Greek islands being one of our favourites. The picture
above, is the view that greeted us the first time we visited Kalami on the north
east coast of Corfu. Tranquil both in May and September (once all the Italians
have gone home!) but busy during the rest of the summer. The main attraction in
Kalami is the "White House", those who have seen the T/V program or read the
book "My Family and Other Animals" by Gerald Durrell, will know that he spent
some of his boyhood living on Corfu. Many believe that he once lived in the
White House, but it was his brother Laurence who resided there.
Our first visit to the island was in 1981 to the old fishing village of Benitses,
before the tourist industry had just taken hold of Corfu. We enjoyed two weeks
of shear bliss, hiring a motorcycle for a couple of days, then a car for
the next week. We returned to "Kerkira" in 1996, but this time to Kalami, once
again the hire car took us to such places as Sidari, so small and peaceful in
1981.........so big & noisy now!. Returning to Kalami in both 1997, &
1999, we have now explored most of the island.
Cefalonia
We visited Cefalonia during May 2000, for the first two days of our holiday it
rained non stop!, the remaining eleven days were dry, sunny & very warm. Our
accommodation was a secluded self catering bungalow complex, set on the hillside
above the small fishing village of Lourdas on the south coast, with a super view
across the Ionian sea to Zakinthos. Like all Greek Islands the natives are very
"laid back" & friendly. There is plenty to see, & we took the one day guided
coach tour to get to know the island before hiring a car.
Lesvos
Our first visit to Lesvos was in May 2001, staying at the Kosmar exclusive
Christinas Garden
Apartments
in Anaxos (run by Iggy and his family), on the north of the island just down the
road from the busier resorts of Petra, and Molyvos. Anaxos is a small quiet
resort, with a few small hotels, lots of family run self catering accommodation,
with no large noisy holiday complex's. There is a scattering of very good cheap
Greek taverna's, a few small supermarkets, and a bakery. The beach is long,
clean, and is made up of small shingle & sand. The Island takes its fame from
the Greek poet Sappho, olive oil, and its famous ouzo, said to be the best in
Greece (it is very good!!) Being the third largest island a hire car is the best
way to explore. The scenery is varied, with an abundance of flora and wildlife.
In the spring many migratory birds visit Lesvos, this attracts "twitchers"
during April & May. If you want more noise or nightlife, Petra is less than 2
miles away, and Molyvos is just a taxi ride.
Great holiday, peaceful, good food, strong booze, nice people and plenty to see.
