Places We Found and Liked
|
Our first visit to Lesvos was in May 2001,
staying at the Christinas
Garden in Anaxos, on the north of the island just down the road
from the busier resorts of Petra, and Molyvos. Anaxos is a small,
quiet resort, with a few small hotels, lots of family run self
catering accommodation, and no large, noisy holiday complex's.
There is a scattering of very good, cheap Greek taverna's, a few
small supermarkets, and a bakery. The beach is long, clean, and is
made up of small shingle & sand. The Island takes its fame from
the Greek poet Sappho, olive oil, and its famous ouzo, said to be
the best in Greece (it is very good!!) The scenery is very varied,
with an abundance of flora and wildlife. In the spring many
migratory birds visit Lesvos, this attracts "twitchers" during
April and May. If you want more noise, or nightlife, Petra is less
than a 1 mile stroll away, and Molyvos is just a taxi ride, or just
over 5 miles if you like walking. We returned to Anaxos in May 2002, 2003, and
2004, June 2005 and July 2007, 2008 and 2009 staying at
both Christinas Garden and Eleftheria Studio's.
Below are a number of places that we have found, or have been
recommended to by other visitors, most of which require a car
to get to. Being one of the larger Greek Islands there is plenty of
exploring to be done! and each year we find new delights. All
directions are given from Anaxos. If you have found any other
"little spots" on Lesvos, please let me have the details + a photo
or two, and I will add them to this site. Details to
Thanks.

Taverna at Skala Eresou
|
Taverna at Skala Eresou
Take the road out of Anaxos towards Skoutaros, pass
through this village (well worth a walk up into the centre
sometime) and continue towards Skalochori. This village is now
by-passed, so stay on the main road and when you reach the "T"
junction, turn right. Carry on just skirting the villages of
Vatousa, and Andissa, the latter has a very nice square, but drinks
can be a bit expensive! About 2 km past Andissa watch out for a
left turn, sign-posted Eresos, take this turn. and follow the road
down passing Eresos village, continue straight on to Skala Eresou,
once there park up. Find the sea, and the village square, stand on
the beach with the square in front of you, and look to the right of
the dried up river, you should see two taverna's, Ignore the
first one, it's the second one where you will be able to get the
very best Greek meatballs, with home made, yes I said HOME MADE
chips, and a good Greek salad.

Lapsarna Harbour
|
Lapsarna beach, harbour &
church Take the same route as above, and after
negotiating the right hand hairpin, and the next sharp left hand
bend at Andissa, watch out for a right hand turn (it's just before
a 90 deg right hand bend) take this road. It starts off as tarmac,
but soon becomes a bit rough! keep ahead and stay on the most used
track. eventually you will drop to sea level, and the beach will
have been in view, watch out for a left hand turn, take it, and
very soon you will find yourself on the beach front, keep left up
to the church and harbour (I bet your the only one there!) Make
sure you take some food with you, and plenty of water. Tip
freeze a couple of bottles of water the night before, as they will
keep your food cool, and provide cold water for most of the day. By
the way a 4 wheel drive jeep is best for this run, but we made it
in a Subaru Vivo!!

Tsonia Bay
|
Tsonia Bay Head out from
Anaxos, through Petra and on to Molyvos, just before you enter the
town there is a right hand turn (110deg) signposted to Mandamados.
take this road and pass through, or by the villages of Vafios,
Argenos, Lepetimnos, and Sikamina. You will very soon find a very
sharp right hand bend, with piles of road stone on the right, watch
out for the left turn into the village of Klio. Go into the centre
taking the left fork, then left at the bottom of the hill. Follow
the new road and go past the road works, stay on the main track.
Look for a left hand bend, don't go up the hill, follow the
road round the left hand bend. Continue along the track for
about half a mile and you will find you are in the village.
Keep going straight on and you will find a parking area almost on
the beach.

Taverna at Fillia
|
Taverna at Fillia Leave
Anaxos towards Skoutaros, pass through this village and continue
towards Skalochori for just over 4 km. Watch out for a left hand
turn signposted to Fillia (it's a new road laid with funding from
the EEC) Follow the road into the centre of the village and you
will come to the square, look straight ahead and you will see the
Taverna of Lady-Meni (you can't miss it as it's the only one in the
square!) run by an elderly lady. She speaks only Greek, and a
little German, and used to run a taverna on the beach near Anaxos,
but gave it up for this smaller one in Fillia. The food here is
excellent, we had two large beers, a plate of lamb stew each, and a
large Greek salad, with bread etc, for just over €14, which
equates to around ten pounds. We were then presented with a free
sweet, it was cheese (I think), with mint, wrapped in filo pastry,
topped with icing sugar, and drizzled with strawberry sauce. Mmmm
filo pastry, strawberry sauce, as Homer Simpson would say! GO AND
ENJOY!

View from Petri Taverna
|
Petri Head out of Anaxos
to meet the main Mytilini / Molyvos road at the T junction, turn
left towards Petra, pass the two filling stations, and look out for
the cross roads with the right turn signposted to Petri, turn right
and just follow your nose. The road soon becomes a dirt track, and
you will have to negotiate the new road building. Keep on climbing
up the hill, and the dirt track will turn into a tarmac road again!
Go past the army base on your right (do not turn right) and
continue until the road ends (there is a car park) Park up, walk
into the village and take the first turning on the left, the
taverna is on the left, enter, sit down and enjoy the view! The
food here is excellent, and you will properly be asked to go into
the kitchen and choose your meal. The cat (Lola) is very friendly ,
and is one of the only cats I have seen sit up and beg. If your
there at night, as you leave turn right out of the taverna, but
turn left at the top. Carry on a little way until you are out of
the village, then just stop, look (if the moon is out) and listen.
Do it, and you will know what I mean!

Ermogenis Bay
|
Ermogenis Bay Take
the road out of Anaxos turning right at the T junction towards
Mytilini. When you get to Kalloni watch out for the left hand turn
signposted Mytilini. On the road out of Kalloni, on the right hand
side there is a storks nest on top of a tower, if you are there in
May, you could see the chicks. Continue on to Mytilini passing
through the capitol, following the signs for the airport. Stay on
the main road and look out for a left hand turn to Ermogenis, (it's
about 10 km from the airport) Take this turn and continue to the
end of the road. There is a taverna on the beach, but when we were
there in May, it was closed, so if you intend to spend the day
there, take a packed lunch and plenty to drink! It is worth looking
at the little Church, but if you are going inside, please remember
your dress code.
